At the beginning of the 16th century, the neighborhood was part of the territory of the Tupinambás Indians. With the defeat of these before the Portuguese and their Temiminós allies in 1567, the region, under the name of Freguesia de São João de Carahy, was donated to the Temiminó chief Arariboia in 1568, as part of the Sesmaria dos Índios. [1]
In the 19th century, the region joined the newly created Vila Real da Praia Grande, which would change its name to Niterói in 1834. At the time, its beach consisted of an extensive sand, bordered by pitangueiras, cashew trees, cacti and typical restinga vegetation. Its effective settlement began in the 1840s and 1850s. [1]
In 1916, the Hotel Balneário Casino Icarahy was opened. In 1939, the palace that housed the hotel was demolished to be replaced by an art deco style building, designed by architect Luiz Fossati. With the ban on gambling in the country in 1946, the casino ceased to function. As of 1967, the building started to house the rectory of the Universidade Federal Fluminense. [2]
In 1937, a reinforced concrete trampoline was built in the middle of the beach, with resources from the city hall, the press and the Icarahy Racing Club. The trampoline was another project by the architect Luiz Fossati. During the 1930s and 1940s, the Icaraí Cinema was built, in an art deco style. The trampoline of Praia de Icaraí was dynamited in 1964 for offering danger to bathers and after accidents with fatal victims. [3]
Since the 1970s, with the construction and inauguration of the Presidente Costa e Silva Bridge, the neighborhood has consolidated itself as a polarizing urban center of great importance for the city, with a strong concentration of commerce, services and leisure activities. [1]
